NHS Band 8a Salary Calculator

Full-time Agenda for Change hours are 37.5 per week.

Estimate only; actual take-home pay depends on your tax code, payroll method, pension treatment and other deductions.

Use this calculator to estimate NHS Band 8a gross salary, hourly pay and take-home earnings for 2026/27. Your result is based on the pay step, contracted hours, work location and pension option you select.

What Is NHS Band 8a?

Band 8a is the first level within the Band 8 section of Agenda for Change. Posts can include advanced clinical practitioners, modern matrons, service managers and other senior clinical or operational roles.

The exact band depends on the evaluated duties and responsibilities of the post. A job title alone does not confirm that a position belongs in Band 8a.

This calculator applies to Agenda for Change employees in England from 1 April 2026. If you need to calculate a different band, use the Agenda for Change Pay Calculator.

Check These Details Before Calculating

You will need:

  • Your confirmed Band 8a pay step
  • Your basic contracted hours per week
  • The location attached to your job
  • Your NHS Pension Scheme membership status

Your contract, payslip or pay progression record should show your current salary or pay step. Ask payroll or HR if the information is unclear.

Do not choose a pay step using only your total NHS service. In-band progression can depend on your contractual pay-step date, eligibility and employer confirmation.

Other tools for checking NHS earnings and deductions are available on the NHS Salary Calculators homepage.

NHS Band 8a Salary and Hourly Rates

The England Band 8a basic-pay points for 2026/27 are:

Pay stepAnnual salaryHourly rate
Entry£57,528£29.42
Intermediate£60,417£30.90
Top£64,750£33.11

These rates apply to full-time employees working 37.5 hours per week outside London HCAS areas.

They are gross basic-pay figures before Income Tax, National Insurance and pension contributions. Overtime, enhancements and other allowances are not included.

The figures can be verified against the official NHS Employers 2026/27 pay scales.

How to Use the Calculator

Select your Band 8a pay step first. Choose entry, intermediate or top according to your employment record.

Enter your normal basic contracted hours. Use 37.5 for a full-time working pattern. Part-time employees should enter their actual weekly contracted hours.

Choose one work location:

  • Outside London HCAS areas
  • Inner London
  • Outer London
  • London fringe

Select whether to include an estimated NHS pension contribution, then press Calculate.

The results show:

  • Annual gross pay
  • Official hourly rate
  • Estimated Income Tax
  • Estimated National Insurance
  • Estimated pension contribution
  • Annual take-home pay
  • Monthly take-home pay

How Is the Hourly Rate Worked Out?

The calculator starts with the full-time annual salary for your selected pay step.

A full-time Agenda for Change week contains 37.5 hours. The calculation also uses the average number of weeks in a normal year:

Average weeks = 365 ÷ 7 = 52.142857

For the Band 8a entry step:

Hourly rate = £57,528 ÷ 52.142857 ÷ 37.5

Hourly rate = £29.42

The same method gives £30.90 at the intermediate step and £33.11 at the top step.

Step-by-Step Part-Time Pay Calculation

Part-time salary is calculated using full-time equivalent hours.

FTE = Contracted weekly hours ÷ 37.5

For an employee working 30 hours:

30 ÷ 37.5 = 0.8 FTE

At the Band 8a entry step:

Part-time annual pay = £57,528 × 0.8

Part-time annual pay = £46,022.40

The calculator uses this adjusted annual pay when estimating tax, National Insurance and pension.

The displayed hourly rate remains connected to the chosen pay step and location. Working fewer hours reduces annual and monthly earnings rather than the underlying basic hourly rate.

How Does London HCAS Change the Result?

Eligible employees working in London and surrounding high-cost areas may receive a High Cost Area Supplement.

The calculator uses these 2026/27 limits:

  • Inner London: 20%, capped at £8,746
  • Outer London: 15%, capped at £6,137
  • London fringe: 5%, capped at £2,270

Band 8a full-time salaries reach the maximum supplement in each area.

For an entry-step employee in Inner London:

Basic salary = £57,528

Inner London HCAS = £8,746

Gross pay including HCAS = £66,274

For the same pay step, the calculator uses £63,665 in Outer London and £59,798 in the London fringe.

Select HCAS according to your work base, not simply your home address. Your employer can confirm whether the supplement applies to your post.

How Are Pension, Tax and NI Estimated?

When pension is included, the calculator identifies a contribution tier from the calculated annual pensionable pay.

A full-time entry-step Band 8a employee outside London falls within the 10.7% tier:

£57,528 × 10.7% = £6,155.50

Intermediate and top-step employees outside London also remain in the 10.7% tier. HCAS can move the calculated pay into the 12.5% tier.

The calculator deducts the estimated pension amount before working out Income Tax.

For Income Tax, it assumes:

  • £12,570 standard Personal Allowance
  • 20% basic rate
  • 40% higher rate
  • 45% additional rate where applicable

Employee National Insurance is estimated at 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above £50,270.

Worked Band 8a Take-Home Example

Suppose you select:

  • Entry pay step
  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Outside London HCAS areas
  • Pension included

Gross annual salary = £57,528

Estimated pension = £6,155.50

Estimated Income Tax = £7,981

Estimated National Insurance = £3,161.16

The estimated annual take-home pay is:

£57,528 − £6,155.50 − £7,981 − £3,161.16

Annual take-home pay = £40,230.34

The estimated monthly result is:

£40,230.34 ÷ 12 = £3,352.53

This is an annualised estimate. It is not a guaranteed payslip result.

Understanding Your Result

Annual gross pay includes the selected basic salary, FTE adjustment and HCAS where applicable.

Take-home pay is the amount remaining after the deductions supported by the calculator. It does not include every possible payroll item.

You can use the NHS Pay Bands Overview if you want to compare the result with Band 8b or another salary level.

Your actual payslip may also include:

  • Student-loan repayments
  • Salary sacrifice
  • Overtime and enhancements
  • On-call payments
  • Recruitment and retention premiums
  • Union fees
  • Arrears or back pay
  • Unpaid leave

Check the selected inputs again if the gross result looks wrong. Contact payroll when the salary or HCAS recorded for your employment appears incorrect.
