What Pay Does This Unsocial Hours Calculator Estimate?
Working during nights, weekends or public holidays may qualify some Agenda for Change employees for an additional payment. This calculator provides an estimated breakdown of that payment using the applicable England pay band, pay point and eligible working hours.
After entering the required details, the results separate:
- Basic hourly pay
- Ordinary pay for the entered hours
- Saturday and weekday-night enhancement
- Sunday and public-holiday enhancement
- Total additional enhancement
- Combined gross payment
The calculator uses England’s Agenda for Change salaries effective from 1 April 2026. It supports eligible full-time and part-time employees, but it does not calculate overtime, on-call payments or take-home deductions.
Doctors, dentists and employees working under different contractual or locally modified arrangements should confirm their entitlement with their employer before relying on the estimate.

How to Use and Calculate NHS Unsocial Hours Pay
First, select your Agenda for Change band and the pay point applying to your role. The calculator will automatically display the corresponding 2026/27 full-time annual salary.
Enter your contracted hours per week. Use 37.5 hours for a standard full-time Agenda for Change contract or enter your actual weekly hours if you work part-time.
Next, enter the qualifying hours in the correct fields:
- Put Saturday and eligible weekday-night hours in the first field.
- Put Sunday and recognised public-holiday hours in the second field.
- Do not enter identical working hours in both input fields.
Choose whether these hours represent one selected period, a typical week or a typical month. This selection controls whether monthly and annual enhancement projections are displayed.
Select Calculate enhancement to generate the estimate. If your full-time equivalent salary differs from the listed pay point, enable the custom-salary option and enter the annual amount shown in your employment information.
The basic hourly rate is worked out as follows:
Full-time annual basic salary ÷ 52.143 ÷ 37.5
The additional enhancement uses this calculation:
Basic hourly rate × qualifying hours × enhancement rate
Ordinary earnings and the additional enhancement appear as separate results. This distinction prevents the enhancement from being mistaken for the entire payment earned during those hours.
For a general breakdown of earnings across different pay periods, use the NHS Wage Calculator. You can return to the NHS Salary Calculator when comparing other NHS pay tools.
Band 5 Calculation Example
Consider a full-time Band 5 employee at the entry pay point with an annual basic salary of £32,073. For one selected period, the employee records:
- 8 qualifying Saturday or weekday-night hours
- 4 qualifying Sunday or public-holiday hours
For Bands 4–9, the relevant enhancement rates are 30% for Saturday and weekday nights and 60% for Sundays and public holidays.
Step 1: Work out the basic hourly rate
£32,073 ÷ 52.143 ÷ 37.5 = approximately £16.40 per hour
Step 2: Find the ordinary pay for all entered hours
The employee entered 12 hours in total:
Unrounded hourly rate × 12 = £196.83
Step 3: Work out the Saturday/night addition
Unrounded hourly rate × 8 × 30% = £39.37
Step 4: Work out the Sunday/public-holiday addition
Unrounded hourly rate × 4 × 60% = £39.37
Step 5: Combine both enhancements
Using the underlying unrounded amounts, the estimated additional enhancement is:
£78.73
Step 6: Find the combined gross payment
Ordinary pay and the additional enhancement are added together:
£196.83 + unrounded enhancement = £275.56
The calculator completes each stage with unrounded figures and rounds only the displayed result to two decimal places. As a result, adding individually rounded amounts by hand may occasionally create a difference of one penny.
What Counts as NHS Unsocial Hours and What Rates Apply?
For employees covered by the relevant Agenda for Change provisions, qualifying unsocial hours generally include:
- Weekday work after 8pm and before 6am
- Saturday work between midnight and midnight
- Sunday work between midnight and midnight
- Work performed on a recognised public holiday
Eligibility depends on the employee’s contractual terms. Hours should only be entered when they qualify for the relevant enhancement.
The calculator applies the following percentages:
| NHS pay band | Saturday and weekday nights | Sunday and public holidays |
|---|---|---|
| Band 1 | Basic pay + 47% | Basic pay + 94% |
| Band 2 | Basic pay + 41% | Basic pay + 83% |
| Band 3 | Basic pay + 35% | Basic pay + 69% |
| Bands 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 | Basic pay + 30% | Basic pay + 60% |
An enhancement of 30% means an extra payment equal to 30% of the basic hourly rate. The employee still receives ordinary basic pay for that qualifying hour; the enhancement is added on top.
The employee’s basic hourly earnings provide the starting figure for each enhancement calculation. HCAS, temporary recruitment and retention premiums, and other allowances should not automatically be included in the hourly rate unless the relevant contractual terms require it.
Unsocial-hours enhancements and overtime cover different situations. An enhancement may apply to qualifying work completed within normal contracted hours. Overtime generally relates to authorised hours beyond the employee’s standard contractual commitment.
Employees working beyond their contracted commitment can assess those hours separately with the NHS Overtime Pay Calculator.
Although new appointments are no longer normally made to Band 1, the option remains useful for staff whose existing employment still uses that band. The NHS Pay Bands Overview brings the current salaries for the remaining Agenda for Change bands together in one comparison.
NEW
The calculator’s rate table follows the payment categories published in the official NHS Employers guidance for unsocial-hours payments. Contractual entitlement and the final payroll payment should still be confirmed with the employee’s NHS organisation.
FAQs
Q1: Are unsocial-hours enhancements added to ordinary basic pay?
A: Yes. For each eligible hour, the employee normally receives ordinary basic pay plus the applicable percentage enhancement. The calculator displays these two amounts separately.
Q2: Can an NHS part-time employee use this calculator?
A: Yes. Enter the actual contracted weekly hours. The calculator shows a pro-rata annual basic salary while deriving the hourly rate from the applicable full-time pay point.
Q3: Is overtime included in the calculation?
A: No. The calculator covers qualifying unsocial hours under the specified Agenda for Change arrangement. Overtime and on-call payments require separate calculations.
Q4: Will the result show take-home pay?
A: No. The displayed figures are gross estimates before Income Tax, National Insurance, NHS Pension contributions, student-loan repayments and other payroll deductions.
Q5: Can these rates be used for every UK nation?
A: No. The calculator currently uses England’s Agenda for Change salary scale and applicable unsocial-hours framework. Staff in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland should check the terms published for their nation.
Q6: Why does my payslip show a different amount?
A: Differences may result from payroll rounding, local or protected arrangements, ambulance provisions, overtime classification, an incorrect salary selection or incorrectly entered hours. Your employment contract and employer’s payroll calculation determine the payment you receive.
